A short day today both because of entering Glacier National Park and because of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Glacier has a lot of rules around who can can be where when that are not especially well advertised. Bicycles are not allowed on most of Going-to-the-Sun road from 3-6pm this time of year.
I got into the park around noon and found out I needed a reservation for hiker/biker camping. I looped to the Apgar Visitor Center, the only place with WiFi, to make a reservation and then headed down the road to the Avalanche campground located right before the alpine section of the road begins.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice to ride this section of road was. There are no shoulders, but this forces cars to really pass you instead of a barely wide enough to fit shoulder where cars often seem to think a foot or less clearance is okay. There are also vehicle size limitations for this road, so none of the cars are excessively bulky. Lastly, cars require a reservation to drive west to east on the road before 3pm limiting the amount of traffic. Overall, in about 15 miles I only had 1 car pass closer than I would have liked.
I was the only hiker/biker at the campground. I took a very short hike to the river and then spent a good portion of the afternoon waiting near a bathroom, the only shelter, for thunderstorms since my tent was in a cluster of tall trees that could be high risk for a lightning strike.
Things calmed down in the evening and I went to sleep. But, around 10pm more storms rolled in closer this time and I spent a couple hours in the bathroom. Another camper who had had cell service in the evening let me know it is supposed to rain on and off all day tomorrow, so I may stay parked here while the weather passes. It is also not out of the question to backtrack and take the alternate route.
